Janet Ruth

Janet Ruth is an author, teacher, and life-long learner. She holds a master’s degree in Biblical Studies as well as a law degree and has written one novel and three Christian living books.

As a writer and speaker, Janet is passionate about encouraging Christians to truly live what they say they believe. Her books help Christians internalize their Christian beliefs so they influence their thoughts and actions every day.

Janet is a native and current resident of Arizona, but has lived outside Arizona twice—once in Indiana and once in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She received her bachelor’s degree from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix and a law degree from Arizona State University College of Law in Tempe, Arizona. She practiced law for five years as an Assistant United States Attorney, handling criminal trials and appellate arguments, and then spent three years as a staff attorney for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

With two small children at home, Janet chose to become a (mostly) stay-at-home mom, but she still managed to teach Criminal and Constitutional Law classes part time at a community college, volunteer at school events, and teach Bible classes at her church.

In 2015, Janet completed a master’s degree in Biblical Studies from Grand Canyon University. She is active in a local church, loves traveling with her husband and kids (who are both young adults now), and hopes to eventually find time to write another novel.

Using Stories to Understand Worldview

Each of us has an internal worldview—our understanding of how the world works and where it’s going. Janet uses elements of story-telling to help Christians ensure their internal worldview  is consistent, comprehensive, and biblical.

Should Christians watch secular movies and television?

Many Christians are worried about watching shows with non-Christian worldviews. Janet shows the value of such shows in helping listeners engage with their non-Christian friends. But not all shows are healthy for the Christian mind and spirit.

Is there One Christian Worldview or Many?

Most books on worldview talk about a single Christian worldview. But Christians have different ideas about the world we live in and our purpose in it. By looking at worldviews in a new way, Janet helps listeners understand that Christians don’t always agree—and that’s okay.

A Lawyer Takes on Theology

Can we have faith without absolute assurance? Does the Bible require we be dogmatic in our beliefs, or is there room for uncertainty? As a former trial and appellate attorney, Janet suggests we use different “standards of proof” for our beliefs, holding some tightly and some lightly.

What inspires you to write?

I took writing courses in college and always wanted to write a novel. I finally had time to write when I was teaching college classes part-time. I made up my own fairy-tale story and did lots of research to place it in a real historical setting. While I was writing that fiction book, I started thinking about writing non-fiction books that would teach about my Christian faith. Although my novel is not considered Christian fiction, there is an element of faith in it. The process of writing a novel also taught me a lot about the sovereignty of God and helped me trust his long-term plan.
